La marque jeune

The Museum of Walloon Life will host from March 5 to August 15, 2010, the exhibition 'La Marque Jeune', which was designed and produced by the Museum of Ethnography of Neuchatel. It explores the relationship between youth, anti-establishment activities and consumption.

Since the 1950s, youth is a social group in itself. It offers forms of beauty, behaviors and habits that are different from those of their elders.

This surge of originality, requiring society to question its social, political and technical codes, eventually spreads out to the entire population. Yet anti-establishment activities of youngsters are invariably perceived as a danger.

The media discourse about young people is one side of the exhibition. The ritual is presented as a counterpoint: new rites of passage and interaction are created by young people in order to understand and integrate a world that appears disoriented. This is especially true as the market presents consumption as the ultimate goal of existence.
